Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-TN): Every year, unsuspecting Americans fall victim to pyramid schemes. Operating under the guise of reputable direct selling businesses, these schemes often target the most vulnerable such as single parents, immigrants, and retirees. While many states, including Tennessee, have taken measures to fight back against pyramid schemes through legislation, no such legislation currently exists at the federal level. That’s why I introduced the Anti Pyramid Promotional Scheme Act of 2017 with Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX). Our bipartisan bill will add a definition to federal law so that direct selling participants will better understand the difference between a legitimate business and a predatory scheme. This bill provides the federal government with a legal standard and enforcement authority to prosecute bad actors, protecting aspiring business owners against pyramid schemes and making the marketplace safer for consumers.
